ANNUAL HYDROLOGICAL REPORT OF THE NIGER BASIN YEAR 2019/2020

NBO Dept./Hydrolocal monitoring

The 2019/2020 hydrological year in the Niger Basin was in deficit at the Upper Niger, average at the Inner Delta and wet at the Middle Niger and the Lower Niger.

The average flow situation observed at the Inner Niger Delta was due to the inflows from the tributary Bani in Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.

In the Middle Niger, flows from the tributaries of the right bank Dargol, Gourouol, Sirba and Goroubi rivers from Burkina Faso, significantly contributed to the water flow of the River Niger.

The Lower Niger experienced a wet hydrological year. The flows from the River Benue tributary contributed about 58% of the flows recorded at the confluence (Lokoja station) of River Benue and River Niger before empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

The water levels at Selingué dam in Mali and Kainji dam in Nigeria have all reached the normal reservoir level and have contributed to low flow situation support downstream.
