YELLOW ALLERT AT THE NIAMEY STATION

NBA/Hydrological monitoring
Monday 4 September 2017 by administrateur, Bachir TANIMOUNE, KONE Soungalo

Niger River local flooding, which started since mid-August 2017, has manifested itself by rapid rises in the water level in Niamey. Those rises have been speeded these last days to reach the yellow alert rating in force in Niamey (530 m) on 1st September 2017.

Forecasts and observations show that the yellow alert which started on September 1st 2017 still exists and that the coming 3 days (up to 7th September 2017) will be in yellow alert.

For this alert, risks for rapid water increase are real and there is need for vigilance. Populations living in flooding areas must particularly remain vigilant.

SITUATION DOWNSTREAM NIAMEY

Increase in the water level in Niamey will expand downstream to the stations of Malanville, in Benin, and Jidere Bode, upstream the Kainji dam in Nigeria. Riparian populations in those places should be vigilant, particularly those living in river flooding risk prone areas.

The Niger Basin Authority is monitoring the development of the situation and will be progressively providing information. For the monitoring of forecasts, please consult the NBA site at www.sath.abn.ne.
