Monthly hydrological buletin January 2015

IWRM2 Projet , NBA Niamey NIGER

INTRODUCTION

Hydrological flow situation in the Niger basin during the month of January was characterized by a continued flows decrease in the Niger basin. While dry flow situation is observed at the Upper Niger and the Lower Niger.

Reservoir water releases from Selingué Dam in Mali as well as Kainji and Jebba Dams in Nigeria is on process.

The flow analysis situation was carried out by dividing the basin into four sub-catchments also represented with reference gauging stations as follows: Upper Niger at Koulikoro (Mali), Inland Delta at Dire (Mali), Middle Niger in Niamey (Niger) and Lower Niger at Lokoja (Nigeria) as shown in figure 1.

Figures 2 to 5 and Table 1 show respectively, the comparative hydrographs for hydrological years 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014and 2014/2015 as well as the five-year wet and dry return periods and mean at the references stations.

Figures 6 and 7 show the evolution of the reservoir water level at Kainji Dam in Nigeria and Selingué Dam in Mali.

Tables 2 and 3 show the monthly flow characteristics of some hydrometric monitoring network stations of the Project Management Unit of the NBA.

Data used for analysis are also from different Data Collection Platforms (DCP) stations installed in the Niger basin as part of project activities IWRM-2, National Hydrological Services of NBA Member Countries and Selingué, Kainji and Jebba dam management authorities.
