1.0 Analyses of the hydrological situation
While there low flow in most parts of Niger basin in December 2013 with lesser flow in the upper Niger (Koulikoro) and also in the Lower Niger basins (Lokoja), the black flood has reached its peak in the Inland Delta (Dire) in and is still rising in the Middle Niger (Niamey).
The mean monthly flow recorded at these reference stations are; 420m3/s at Koulikoro in the Upper Niger, 1885m3/s at Diré in the Inland Delta, 1500m3/s at Niamey in the Middle Niger and 3228m3/s at Lokoja in the Lower Niger basin. Statistically, these flow values are close to inter annual Mean Five Years Return Period (FYRP) at Koulikoro, Diré, and Lokoja but close to FYRP dry at Niamey. The observations also show that the dam of Sélingué and kainji reached their optimum storage capacity in December.
